had not also done; yet the Japanese were punished as severely as the
Nazis. The atomic bombs were dropped on Japanese cities. I wonder
if
they would have been dropped on German cities. In short, there seems
to be evidence that-partly from racial prejudice, partly because our
culture
is
so alien to Japan's-we treated the Japanese in the late war
with a contemptuous brutality we did not exercise against our white
European enemies. The case of General Yamashita is a tragic instance.
