A truly democratic culture would
spread, and no longer would readers
be exposed to such second-rate contem–

or
The
Machiauellians.

MISTAKE
Sirs:
Joachim Remak
I wish to clear up a misunderstand–
ing on the part of Mr. List and his
correspondent in the March issue of
PARTISAN
REviEw. Mr. List in his reply
is confusing Mr. Bernard Herman of
Forest Hills, New York, with me. I
do not wish to enter into the aesthetics
under discussion, but since the last part
of Mr. List's reply seems to be an at–
tack upon my assumed dislike of atonal
music I wish to point out that during
my twelve years with the Columbia
Broadcasting System as a conductor I
have performed a considerable amount
of atonal music. Only last year I was
instrumental in bringing before the
American public the first radio per–
formance of the concert suite of Alban
Berg's
Wo~~eck.
Never at any time
have I ever rejected any music on the
grounds that it was "doctrinated, pre–
judiced and un-American" and I am
not in the least bit uneasy about my
position.

We uery much regret that Mr. List
confused Mr. Herman with Mr. Herr–
mann, and extend our apologies to both.

made me realize that it was about time
to speak my piece on what seems to
