and as his political opinions in gen–
eral are far outside the majority
view of contemporary politics, he
only wished to talk of the arts and
of writers. Of his own career as a
writer he says that he began by
being consciously priggish about
reading and would tolerate noth–
ing but eighteenth-century writers
-particularly Smollett, Fielding
and Fanny Burney. On these he
proceeded to model himself but
soon abandoned the effort in or–
der to search for a more compli–
cated form and a greater simpli–
city of syntax. Almost the first pre–
cept he discovered was to "write
with real enjoyment-if what you
are writing bores you don't go on;
it is bound to bore the reader." His
most valuable experience and the
one that did most to form him as
a writer was the great quantity of
journalistic work that he was
forced to do in his early life-his
father gave him no money and he
had to make a living with his pen
by writing articles for many Lon–
don newspapers and magazines. He
does not believe that the thought
of having a rich father gave him
any particular sense of security to
aid him in becoming a writer, but
he does believe that a small income
is almost an essential and that "it
is as indecent for a writer to be
born without two hundred pounds
a year as to be born without arms
or legs." This he qualifies by say-
