Vol. 15 No.1 1948 - page 1

Seeing is believing:
In the past ten years the "documentary" film has become one of our –
most important and widely used instruments of instruction and in–
doctrination.
It
was John Grierson who first used the word to describe
Robert Flaherty's
Moana of the South Seas,
and John Grierson has
been the driving force and chief inspiration of the documentary film
movement. His ideas and ideals have stimulated film makers through–
out the world.
As
the English critic,
M~
C.
A.
Lejeune, has stated:
"Apart from
his
work as a film producer, he has written some of the
most sensible and penetrating comments on
films
ever committed to
British journalism, and it is my hope that some day some publisher
will
make
it
his
business to collect them."
Grierson On Documentary
makes generally available in America, for the first time, John Grierson's
most important writings on the motion picture.
