Awards
For more than o decode Houghton Mifflin Company
has offered two annual literary fellowships, one in
fiction and one in non-fiction to new writers for the
completion of promising work. Eyre
&
Spottiswoode,
one of the oldest and most distinguished of the British
publishing houses, now join them in offering on award
for publication in England and the British Empire.
All American entries ore eligible for the Eyre
&
Spot·
tiswoode award. It is the hope of the two houses
who now associate themselves in this fellowship plan
that the winning projects shall receive both the
American and the British award, thus giving the
opportunity for a unified presentation of that book
throughout the Eng.lish speaking world. However, in
the event that the British and American judges fail to
agree on a joint award, the fellowships will be
oworded individually by each concern. In that event,
the manuscript chosen by the American publisher
wiil be guaranteed publication in England, though
not as a British oword.
The Houghton Mifflin awards ore $2400.00 each. The
Eyre
&
Spottiswoode award is £500. The joint sum to
be about $5000.00. No molter what the oword ar–
rangement, these sums ore to be one- half outright
payments and one-half advance against royalties.
