VARIETY
The book seems to us to be truly
representative of the sensibilities of
its author, to whom no one denies
a great facility of style, but who
cannot go beyond his limited
horizons and looks for little else in
man except debasement. The end
result is just another form of rhet–
oric. Moravia's chief merit lies in
remaining outside of the Italian
literary "Arcadia," the dream–
world, and of writing with a cer–
tain synthetic style without undue
subtilization and refinement.
The winner of the second prize
(50,000 lire), Gianna Manzini, is
on the other hand immersed up to
the roots of her hair in that so–
called Arcadian style. Gianna Man–
zini is a supersensitive and plain–
tive writer who has enioyed fifteen
