A Henry James Revival
THE BOSTONIANS
wi.th an introduction
by
PHILIP RAHV
The Bostonians
was first published in 1886 and is James' longest
and most ambitious novel on American life. It is the story of American
society of the 1870's as well as the story of love and motivated passion.
Apart from the original edition it has never been reprinted in this
country and was never included in any American edition of James.
The story told by James
in
his advanced, realistic novel was too
strong for the palate of the genteel reading public who were no doubt
troubled by the hint of abnormality between Olive, the strong-minded
feminist and Verena, her beautiful young protege. It is primarily the
struggle of Verena to decide between Basil, the young lawyer who loves
her, and the tortured demands made on her by her domineering patroness
Olive, who does not like men as a class. An unusual novel by the great
American master of fiction.

LITTLE FRIEND, LITTLE FRIEND
By
RANDALL JARRELL
Readers of
Partisan
are familiar with the work of R andall Jarrell
and here is a new book of his verse. These poems are the best record
of the impact of the war upon a truly modern sensibility. They also in–
dicate certain of the leading and the most creative directions taken by
writers during the post-war period.
About war, about sorrow and about guilt, this new book of poems
is full of insight expressed in poetic terms by a mind which is lively,
sensitive, original and learned.
