each other. Who

say? Cars whipped past them. The street was
alive with noise. The girl caught a glimpse of her face in a mirror
and knew that she appeared rough and mean. She did not attempt
to present another face to those who were milling around her and the
boy. No one cared about them, just as they did not care about the
others who had passed through this moment. They were lost in a
narrow row of buildings and factories, squeezed in with the rest of
humanity. She dimly perceived that all this world was pitifully de–
pendent upon the steady recurrence of the emotion into which she
and the boy were drawn.
Now they were separated by fatigue and nervousness. She could
only wait for him to curse away his dissatisfaction and he for her
loud, rebellious laughter. They proceeded on their way to the place
of the ceremony.
