faction with "the normal machi–
nery of experience" of which Sad–
leir, his biographer, approvingly
accuses him. It is the price he pays
for his particular virtues. His fic–
tion answers too well at times an
important but crippling demand
made on the novel: that it be the
recital of events made more inter–
esting in their texture than in their
resolutions.
