POEMS
2.
How measure exact degrees of evil?
Pleading that flabby oval
is less round than vicious circle?
Harlem, not so jerry-built as Georgia slum,
was even once the honored home
of heavy-eating aristocracy.
And only rents impossible to pay
are strung sky-high.
The park is near for after scrub-floor .hours.
But cloudy acid dilute with 6parkling ice
can still suffice,
though wretchings may delay the coroner's call.
Evil is evil, I am what I am.
We need to damn
what's done and leave immediately for new direction.
No baggage to take, no Western goal for hero.
Miles to travel, zero.
Georgia will do as well as any other place
to map to where
colored
shall mean rainbow
ascending sun on row
of equal row, and
segregate
be obsolete like
hate.
ON BEING ILL
Anonymous flesh suddenly Mr. Master.
The big surprise: faithful butler packs a rod,
tells the professor to can the brains, the dollar words,
and pay some attention to him, or he'll get his by God!
