With this issue, PARTISANREVIEW AND ANVIL are combining to
publish a new literary monthly. Though continuing the traditions
of its predecessors, the new magazine will be broader in scope and,
we believe, more mature.
We invite contributions from writers
the country over, and letters from readers on their reactions to our
policy as well as specific stories, poems and articles.

ILDEFONZOPEREDAVALDESis the author of numerous books of poelry,
fiction and criticism. He is a defense attorney for the International
Red Aid, a leading member of the Anti-'War Committee of Uruguay,
and a professor of Castilian literature at the University of Monte-
video.
CARL VAN DOREN'S essay is a re-written version of his address at
the Book Union dinner. As Mr. Van Doren writes: "I have made a
new draft of it for you, keeping close to the original and t,rying to
make it say :0 the reader what the speech said to its hearers."
JAMES NEUGASS'Spoems have appeared in two recent anthologies of
modern American verse, He lives in New York City.

ANDRE 111ALRAUX'Slatest work, which deals with the imprisonment
of a German Communist by the Nazis. The novel has been trans-
lated by I-Iaakon Chevalier,
and will be published next month by

KERKERQUINN is an editor of
Direction
and one of the contributors
to
Trial Balances,
an anthology of younger poets. He lives in C r-
bana, Ill.
NEWTON ARVIN was recently awarded a Guggenheim fellowship to
write a book on \Valt Whitman.
WALDO FRAXK is chairman of the League of American \Vriters. He
is now at work on a new novel.
GE~EVIEVE TAGGARD'Slatest book of verse is entitled
Not Mine to
Finish.
BEN FIELD is the instructor of the short story class in the John Reed
Writers School, which is held under the auspices of PARTISAN
REVIEWAND A~VIL. His stories have appeared frequently in earlier
issues of the magazine.
JOSEPH FREEMAN'S forthcoming book,
An American Testament,
a
narrative of ideas and personalities in relation to the revolutionary
movement, will be published in the spring by Farrar and Rinehart.
SAUL LEVITI' has contributed stories to the

zine, The Awuil,
The American M erwry,
and other periodicals.
He is now completing his first novel.
CLARAWEATHERWAX'S
Marching! Marching!
published last month,
won the prize in the
New Masses
and John Day Co, contest for the
best proletarian novel. It was also a Book L:nion choice. She lives
in Los Angeles, Calif.
