  • Starts: 12:30 pm on Thursday, October 18, 2018
  • Ends: 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 18, 2018
Today’s largest information repository is no longer the public library but websites controlled by a handful of private tech companies - firms whose secret algorithms dominate our news feeds and control our social media.

Journalists and scholars using web scrapers or creating temporary research accounts to gather data from the sites are facing increased threats from tech firm owners claiming violations of state and federal anti-hacking laws.

Come hear how this escalating tension is playing out across the country and how your right to know is being impacted in a lively and informative discussion.

Featured speakers: - Andy Sellars, Director, BU/MIT Technology & Cyberlaw Clinic - Maggie Mulvihill, Associate Professor of the Practice of Computational Journalism, BU College of Communications - Gabe Rottman, Director, Technology and Press Freedom Project, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press - Saurabh Datar, Data Journalist, Boston Globe - Isaiah Thompson, Investigative Reporter, WGBH

All are welcome! A pizza lunch will be served. Please RSVP by October 15 at 5pm by emailing mmulvih@bu.edu.
Location:
765 Commonwealth Avenue - Room 410
