Special Screening of BBC Northern Ireland Documentary and Discussion with the Director

  • Starts: 5:00 pm on Thursday, September 18, 2014
  • Ends: 8:30 pm on Thursday, September 18, 2014
Join director and writer Maurice Fitzpatrick as we screen and discuss the new documentary he wrote and directed for the BBC on Brian Friel's Translations. Fitzpatrick will speak about how playwright, Brian Friel, and the main actor, Stephen Rea, attempted to use drama as a way to overcome communal division in the North. As Rea put it in the documentary: 'What was crazy and courageous was that in the middle of all the appalling suffering of the Troubles we threw on a play and offered language as a way out.' Fitzpatrick also authored the book (and film screenplay), The Boys of St. Columb's. Co-sponsored by The Institute for the Study of Irish Culture (ISIC) at BU, CITL at CGS, COM and the Cinematique Screening Series, the Center for the Study of Europe, the BU Arts Initiative and the BUCH. We hope you can join!
