IS&T SCV Tutorial - Introduction to Information Visualization

  • Starts: 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 13, 2013
  • Ends: 3:30 pm on Thursday, June 13, 2013
Information Visualization is an emerging discipline that uses computer visualization techniques to help people understand and analyze large or abstract data sets which often have no implicit 2D or 3D structure. (This sets Information Visualization apart from Scientific Visualization, which generally deals with grid- or volume-based data.) A large and growing number of techniques are used in Information Visualization, including cone trees, self-organizing maps, and interactive network diagrams. This tutorial will present a broad overview of Information Visualization, including history, techniques, and design principles. A brief interactive session will give students hands-on experience with one or more packages designed for creating visualizations, such as d3 or prefuse.
