King Philip's War in Artifacts and Ideas

  • Starts: 5:30 pm on Thursday, December 13, 2012
The exhibit features more than thirty letters, diaries, paintings, personal objects, weapons, and early printed sources from the 17th century. They document early Puritan life, efforts to convert Native Americans to Christianity, and the devastating war that cost nearly 9,000 lives in New England in the 1670s. The students have spent the semester working with these rare materials, transcribing, researching, and interpreting. At the talk, they will speak about the objects and their historical importance. This exhibit, which is included in the Historical Society's publicity as free and open to the public, is an instance of BU freshmen engaging in the public sphere at a professional level. Its array of manuscripts, paintings, and valuable historical objects, will make for attractive photographs of students and their work, particularly in the rich surroundings of the Historical Society. "King Philip's War in Artifacts and Ideas" takes place Thursday, Dec. 13, with a reception at 5:30 and the presentation at 6:00. The Massachusetts Historical Society is located at 1154 Boylston St., a short walk from Kenmore Square and just across the street from the Fens.
