Sponsored by the Wirth Institute, the conference brought together leading scholars to explore the often-overlooked histories of cooperation and exchange between Central Europe and the Ottoman world.<\/p>\n<p>Genell\u2019s talk, \u201cThe Capitulations and Minority Rights at the Congress of Berlin (1878),\u201d was featured on the conference\u2019s diplomacy panel, which examined historical practices of governance, representation, and knowledge production across imperial contexts.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In her presentation, Genell examined how the Congress of Berlin reshaped understandings of minority rights and international legal frameworks within the late Ottoman Empire. Her work highlights the diplomatic mechanisms that structured relationships between empires and minority populations, offering fresh insight into the legal and political legacies of the 1878 settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Genell also contributed to the conference\u2019s concluding reflections, helping to synthesize key themes and underscore the importance of reconsidering Central European\u2013Ottoman relations beyond narratives of conflict, toward a more interconnected and global historical perspective.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Professor Genell&#8217;s first book,<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/empire-by-law\/9780231203357\/\">Empire by Law: The Ottoman Origins of the Mandate System in the Middle East<\/a><\/em> (Columbia University Press) is expected to be released on July 2026.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/aimee-genell\/\">Aimee Genell<\/a> is an Assistant Professor of International History. Her research focuses on the history of the late Ottoman Empire and its entanglements with Europe in the area of international law and international relations.
