The ceremonies were held on March 28 in Boston Harbor. Thousands of people braved the cold weather and winds to attend. Speakers included Governor Maura Healey, Congressman Seth Moulton, and Navy General Counsel David Denton, along with senior Navy officers.

After the ceremony, Prof. Woodward enjoyed a special tour of the submarine hosted by members of the crew. Reflecting on this experience, he commented: “I have always wanted to be on an active duty submarine and thanks to the US Navy and the sailors of the USS Massachusetts, I got my ‘bucket list’ wish.

He continued “Although it is the most advanced attack submarine in the world, space is definitely at a premium on board, amenities are limited, and you don’t smell fresh air or see sunlight. It takes a very special kind of sailor to serve on a submarine. I have complete respect and admiration for their dedication and capabilities.
