Jorge Heine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On August 11, 2023, Amb. Jorge Heine,<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Research Professor at Boston University\u2019s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Interim Director of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/\"><span>Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future<\/span><\/a><span>, was quoted in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/\"><em>POLITICO\u00a0<\/em><\/a>article on the congressional delegation (CODEL) of progressives visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/tag\/latin-america\/\">Latin America<\/a> in the second week of August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The CODEL is set to meet with the leaders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/tag\/chile\/\">Chile<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/tag\/colombia\/\">Colombia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/tag\/brazil\/\">Brazil<\/a> to discuss political struggles across the Western hemisphere, especially in the wake of conservative backlash to democratization and democracies globally. Heine was hopeful that the CODEL could also use this visit as an opportunity to re-frame the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/tag\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a>&#8216; rhetoric on the economic and diplomatic relationships between <a href=\"https:\/\/bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/tag\/china\/\">China<\/a> and Latin American states.<\/p>\n<p>Heine argued that &#8220;this whole thing of seeing Latin America just as a stage of great power competition, and how the United States can exclude China, has been very detrimental to the image of the United States in the region.
