While the United States and many European countries have echoed this sentiment and condemned Russia‘s invasion of sovereign Ukraine, numerous Latin American countries have opted not to take sides in a conflict that has pitted “the West versus the Rest.” Heine argues that this situation shows how prevalent active non-alignment has become in global affairs; rather than get entangled in great power struggles, Latin American leaders have chosen not to choose sides, something Heine believes will allow them to focus on the issues plaguing their countries.

The full article can be read on “Política Exterior’s” website.

Ambassador Jorge Heine is a Research Professor at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University.
