Ambassador\u00a0<\/span>Paul Hare<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the\u00a0<\/span>Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/span> at Boston University, was quoted in a\u00a0Reuters<\/em> article discussing the upcoming “Civic March for Change” in Cuba planned for November 15, 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The article, titled “Ahead of planned protests, Cuban government and dissidents wage ‘battle of ideas’<\/a>,” explores the upcoming protests – led by a younger, more internet savvy youth – as well as the Cuban government’s strategy to defame the protest through media campaigns and spycraft. Hare noted that the government is clearly reverting to Cold War-era strategies against protest movements claiming, “they’ve lost the narrative, the battle of ideas, especially with young people.” The article goes on to state how the government is deploying every strategy it can to reel in the protesters, even blaming the United States for meddling in the country’s affairs.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Paul Hare<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>was a British diplomat for 30 years and the British ambassador to Cuba from 2001-04. He now teaches classes at Boston University on Diplomatic Practice, Arms Control, Intercultural Communication, and on Cuba in Transition.
