Kevin Gallagher<\/a>, Professor of Global Development Policy at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and Director of BU\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Global Development Policy Center<\/a> (GDP Center), published an op-ed in\u00a0Al Jazeera\u00a0<\/em>on China’s recent promise to stop financing overseas coal mining and power plants as well as steps the global community should take to invest in green energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his article, titled “China\u2019s global climate change challenge to the West<\/a>,” Gallagher explains Chinese President Xi Jinping’s promise to cease financing on international coal plants and the announcement that followed from the Bank of China that it would stop financing overseas coal mining and power plants this year. With China taking steps to mitigate the effects of climate change and lead in financing renewable energy access in the developing world, Gallager argues that the West needs to step up its own efforts. He states that Western countries “must put pressure on the private sector to phase out coal as well,” and encourage a shift in energy finance towards cleaner energy such as wind and solar power.<\/p>\n
