Ambassador\u00a0<\/span>Paul Hare<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the\u00a0<\/span>Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/span> at Boston University, was interviewed for a\u00a0Guardian\u00a0<\/em>article in which he discusses the recent anti-government protests in Cuba.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The article, titled “Cuban president claims protests part of US plot to \u2018fracture\u2019 Communist party<\/a>,” explores the motivators and response to protests in Cuba, which the government has called “a United States-backed, social media-driven plot to stir up public discontent and overthrow the Cuban regime.”<\/p>\n

Hare commented on the Cuban government’s response stating that the government appears worried about the coordinated protests as they could prove to be a legitimate rival political movement. He predicted there might be a political crackdown on those identified as protest ringleaders as Communist party security chiefs seek to quell the movement.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Paul Hare<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>was a British diplomat for 30 years and the British ambassador to Cuba from 2001-04. He now teaches classes at Boston University on Diplomatic Practice, Arms Control, Intercultural Communication, and on Cuba in Transition.
