Kevin Gallagher<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Professor of Global Development Policy and Director of the\u00a0Global Development Policy Center<\/a>\u00a0(GDP Center) at the\u00a0<\/span>Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/span>\u00a0at Boston University, and Ambassador\u00a0Jorge Heine<\/a>, Research Professor at the Pardee School, co-authored an El Pais<\/em> op-ed arguing that President Joe Biden should reverse the policy of former President Trump\u2019s International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the article, titled “Biden debe cancelar acuerdo de pr\u00e9stamo del IFDC a Ecuador<\/a>” (Biden must cancel IFDC loan agreement to Ecuador), Gallagher and Heine discuss the substantial impacts of COVID-19 on Latin America, the Trump administrations economic policy towards Ecuador, and the Biden administration’s opportunity to reverse course.<\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s IDFC proposed a loan agreement with Ecuador that contained caveats forcing Ecuador to ban Chinese technology and increase its reliance on oil. This deal was not solidified before Trump’s departure from office, and the two authors say that moving away from it would help meet President Biden\u2019s goal of repairing America\u2019s world standing and vision of global prosperity.<\/p>\n
