On January 23, 2021, Adil Najam<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, keynoted a panel at the University of Zurich’s Global Negotiation Conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking place January 22-23, 2021, the virtual conference – “Future of Global Cooperation: Ethics and Governanc<\/a>e” – <\/span>reflected on the role that diplomacy can play as a tool to overcome some of the most pressing issues facing the world.<\/p>\n

During his panel, titled “For a New Global Social Contract<\/a>,” Najam spoke about the future of the “global social contract.” Najam argued that a global social contract needs to arise not simply from expanding social contracts at the a national level to a global stage, but from an organic evolution of truly global norms and deeply global values. He used the example of global climate change as an indication of where a contract is needed and where the world has failed to deliver to date.<\/p>\n

Adil Najam<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is a global public policy expert who also served as the Vice Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan. He is the Inaugural Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and was the former Vice Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). His research focuses on issues of global public policy, especially those related to global climate change, South Asia, Muslim countries, environment and development, and human development.
