[UPDATED MARCH 23, 2021]<\/strong> Kevin Gallagher<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Professor of Global Development Policy and Director of the\u00a0Global Development Policy Center<\/a>\u00a0(GDP Center) at the\u00a0<\/span>Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/span> at Boston University, and Ambassador\u00a0Jorge Heine<\/a>, Research Professor at the Pardee School, co-authored an op-ed in\u00a0The Hill\u00a0<\/em>on the United States’ economic policy in Ecuador.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the article, titled “Biden needs to reverse Trump’s economic policy in Ecuador<\/a>,” Gallagher and Heine argue that President Joe Biden should reverse the policy of former President Trump’s International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which would’ve forced Ecuador to ban Chinese technology and increase its reliance on oil.<\/p>\n

The Trump deal was not solidified before his departure from office, and the two authors say that moving away from it would help meet President Biden’s goal of repairing America’s “world standing and vision of global prosperity.” Ecuador has been wracked by COVID-19 and ensuring debt default, so reworking the DFC deal would not soon be forgotten in Ecuador.<\/p>\n
