Pardee School of Global Studies<\/a> at Boston University<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\">,<\/a><span>\u00a0was quoted in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/may\/06\/doctor-diplomacy-cuba-seeks-to-make-its-mark-in-europe-amid-covid-19-crisis\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a> article on the deployment of Cuban doctors to help combat the coronavirus in Europe. The story, published on May 6, 2020, was entitled &#8220;\u2018Doctor Diplomacy\u2019: Cuba Seeks to Make its Mark in Europe Amid Covid-19 Crisis.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the article, Hare mentioned Cuba&#8217;s &#8220;doctor diplomacy&#8221; policy, which was\u00a0launched by Fidel Castro soon after his 1959 takeover as a means of using the island\u2019s highly trained professionals to export revolutionary ideas and garner allies.<\/p>\n<p>An excerpt from the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFidel was very strategic. He saw they had a surplus of doctors and he saw it as a way of garnering diplomatic support initially. He now teaches classes at Boston University on Diplomatic Practice, Arms Control, Intercultural Communication, and on Cuba in Transition.
