On October 14, 2020, Vivien Schmidt<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, presented her new book \u2013\u00a0Europe\u2019s Crisis of Legitimacy: Governing by Rules and Ruling by Numbers<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 during a webinar hosted by the Leuven Center for Global Governance Studies. The webinar was part of the \u201cGlobal Governance and the European Union: Future Trends and Scenarios\u201d (GLOBE) Project’s webinar series on the future of global governance.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Carlos Closa Montero, Professor at Institute for Public Goods and Policies of the Spanish National Research Council, offered some reflections for discussion before a Q&A with the audience of over 100 attendees. During her remarks, Schmidt discussed the content of the book and how it assesses the legitimacy of European Union (EU) governing activities first in terms of their procedural quality (\u2018throughput)\u2019 by charting EU actors\u2019 different pathways to legitimacy, and then evaluates their policy effectiveness (\u2018output\u2019) and political responsiveness (\u2018input\u2019). She also discussed EU governing legitimacy during the COVID-19 pandemic and what’s next for the Eurozone.<\/p>\n
