Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, published an article in the July edition of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/toc\/jop\/current\"><em>The Journal of Politics<\/em><\/a> &#8211;\u00a0a leading general-interest journal of political science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The article, titled &#8220;Reform, Representation, and Resistance: the Politics of Property Rights&#8217; Enforcement,&#8221; explores how\u00a0<span>quotas for women\u2019s political representation promote economic gender equality? Brule <\/span>draws on evidence collected from\u00a0<span>exogenously set electoral quotas in India\u00a0<\/span>to consider the impact they have\u00a0<span>on women\u2019s property rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An excerpt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When do quotas for female political representation advance economic gender equality? This question, fundamental to debates about democratic institutions\u2019 ability to further social and economic equity, remains contested. A broad body of literature contends that female political representatives boost women\u2019s ability to voice policy preferences and demand political rights. Yet, a competing body of research finds evidence of backlash against female representation, which in turn diminishes women\u2019s political engagement\u00a0and increases discrimination and violence against women.
