Rachel Brule<\/a>, Assistant Professor of Global Development Policy at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, published an article in the July edition of\u00a0The Journal of Politics<\/em><\/a> –\u00a0a leading general-interest journal of political science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The article, titled “Reform, Representation, and Resistance: the Politics of Property Rights’ Enforcement,” explores how\u00a0quotas for women\u2019s political representation promote economic gender equality? Brule <\/span>draws on evidence collected from\u00a0exogenously set electoral quotas in India\u00a0<\/span>to consider the impact they have\u00a0on women\u2019s property rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When do quotas for female political representation advance economic gender equality? This question, fundamental to debates about democratic institutions\u2019 ability to further social and economic equity, remains contested. A broad body of literature contends that female political representatives boost women\u2019s ability to voice policy preferences and demand political rights. Yet, a competing body of research finds evidence of backlash against female representation, which in turn diminishes women\u2019s political engagement\u00a0and increases discrimination and violence against women. I contribute to this debate by considering the impact of political representation on enforcement of women\u2019s rights in a crucial economic domain: property.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
