Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future<\/a>, an affiliate Center of the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University,\u00a0hosted an all-day, interdisciplinary symposium exploring the future of the Arctic. The event, titled\u00a0\u201cArctic Worlds: A Symposium on the Environment and Humanities,\u201d took place at Barristers Hall and was convened by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/english\/profile\/adriana-craciun\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Adriana Craciun<\/a>, a Pardee Center Faculty Associate and Professor &amp; Emma MacLachlan Metcalf Chair of Humanities at BU, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geog.cam.ac.uk\/people\/bravo\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Bravo<\/a>, a Senior Lecturer in Geography at the University of Cambridge.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0symposium, organized in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/humanities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for the Humanities,<\/a>\u00a0included a series of panel discussions featuring leading Arctic experts and concluded with a keynote address by <a href=\"http:\/\/polarconnection.org\/profiles-advisory-bo\/inuuteq-holm-olsen\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Minister Inuuteq Holm Olsen<\/a>,\u00a0the Head of Greenland\u2019s Representation to the U.S. and Canada. Throughout the day, speakers stressed the important role the social sciences and humanities play in understanding the rapidly warming Arctic, a region whose transformation will have profound consequences for its people and the rest of the world.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2019\/02\/28\/arctic-worlds-a-symposium-on-the-environment-and-humanities\/#RSVP\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first panel began with a presentation by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/faculty-directory.dartmouth.edu\/\/ross-virginia\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ross Virginia<\/a>\u00a0(Dartmouth College), who spoke about ways to use the humanities to empower science and achieve more positive social change for Arctic people.\u00a0Michael Bravo recounted the historical interconnectedness of Inuit groups along the Northwest Passage prior to the arrival of Europeans, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lit.mit.edu\/people\/mfuller\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mary C. Fuller<\/a> (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) explained her work providing alternative context to the English narrative of 16th century Anglo-Inuit encounters in Greenland.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2020\/02\/OlsenArcticWorlds.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"430\" height=\"305\" \/>On the second panel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.socanth.cam.ac.uk\/directory\/dr-barbara-bodenhorn\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Barbara Bodenhorn<\/a>\u00a0(University of Cambridge)\u00a0explored\u00a0young Alaskans\u2019 evolving perceptions of the near-, medium-, and long-term impacts of climate change on their lives. Pardee Center Faculty Research Fellow\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/catherine-west\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Catherine West<\/a> (BU Departments of Anthropology &amp; Archaeology) explained her ongoing Unalaska Sea Ice Project, which\u00a0aims to understand past human-animal-environmental interactions in the context of a changing climate in coastal Alaska.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geog.hku.hk\/mm-bennett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mia Bennett<\/a>\u00a0(The University of Hong Kong) explored ways to visually depict climate change in the Arctic to compel meaningful action, rather than feelings of passivity or hopelessness.<\/p>\n<p>The last panel began with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/history.mit.edu\/people\/harriet-ritvo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harriet Ritvo<\/a> (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), who explained her approach to teaching an undergraduate course on climate change that blends science with the humanities.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/envs.dartmouth.edu\/people\/lauren-e-culler\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren E. Culler<\/a>\u00a0(Dartmouth College) explored the impact that climate change is having on insects in Greenland, and the cascading consequences these changes are having on the Arctic ecosystem. Finally, Prof. Craciun spoke about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a reservoir in the\u00a0Svalbard archipelago designed to protect against the loss of seeds during global crises.<\/p>\n<p>In his keynote address, Minister Olsen gave a wide-ranging talk on Greenland\u2019s evolving political relationship with Denmark, its international relations with European and North American countries, and its crucial geopolitical role in the future of the Arctic. He acknowledged the improvements that Greenland must make in various areas \u2014 particularly infrastructure and economic development \u2014 but stressed the importance of its people having increased decision-making power over what happens in its neighborhood. He also urged people outside the Arctic to let the region\u2019s 4.5 million people tell their stories, cautioning against the frequently erroneous, superficial, or clich\u00e9d media portrayals of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Closing remarks were presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/adil-najam\/\">Dean Adil Najam<\/a> of the Pardee School of Global Studies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Frederick S.
