Woodward Jr.<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">,\u00a0Professor of the Practice of International Relations at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\"><span class=\"s2\">Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0gave a special lecture to faculty and students at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waynesburg.edu\/\">Waynesburg University<\/a> in southwestern Pennsylvania on US intelligence challenges and how identification technologies can\u00a0improve national security on\u00a0February 21, 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span>Woodward began his presentation by explaining that tension between the President and his intelligence chiefs is not really new, noting how President Harry Truman in August 1945 fired William Donovan, the head of the Office of Strategic Services.<\/span><span>\u201cIntelligence professionals have to develop thick skins.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Drawing on his experience as Director of the Department of Defense Biometrics Management Office during the height of the Iraq War, Woodward explained how biometric technologies, or automated methods of human recognition based on a physiological or behavioral characteristic, can be used to identify terrorists and other threats.\u00a0 The U.S. military, working closely with law enforcement, implemented and used biometric technologies like computerized fingerprinting to identify numerous foreign persons\u00a0who posed a possible threat to coalition forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Professor James Tanda, a retired Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) officer, and current faculty member of Waynesburg University\u2019s criminal justice administration department hosted the visit. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/john-woodward\/\">Woodward<\/a><span>\u00a0is a Professor of the Practice at the BU Pardee School and a former Central Intelligence Agency officer who, during his twenty-year CIA career, served as an operations officer in\u00a0the Clandestine Service and as a technical intelligence officer in the Directorate of Science and Technology, with assignments in Washington D.C.,\u00a0East Asia, Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.\u00a0He also\u00a0served as the Director of the U.S. Department of\u00a0Defense Biometrics Management Office from 2003-2005.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Woodward spoke to students at Pennsylvania&#8217;s Waynesburg University on US Intelligence Challenges. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14433,"featured_media":41295,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[8432],"tags":[11480,8904,11548,9285],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41263"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/14433"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=41263"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41263\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":48195,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41263\/revisions\/48195"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/41295"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=41263"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=41263"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=41263"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
