Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was interviewed for a recent article on reducing mercury pollution in small-scale gold mining operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Selin was quoted in a November 25, 2019 article entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/EHP6417\">A Safer Gold Rush? Curbing Mercury Pollution in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining,<\/a>&#8221; published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/\"><em>Environmental Health Perspectives<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the text of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p xmlns:ali=\"http:\/\/www.niso.org\/schemas\/ali\/1.0\/\" xmlns:oasis=\"http:\/\/www.niso.org\/standards\/z39-96\/ns\/oasis-exchange\/table\" xmlns:xsi=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2001\/XMLSchema-instance\">There is no specific timeline under the Minamata Convention for reducing the use of mercury in ASGM. Countries that judge themselves to have \u201cmore than insignificant\u201d ASGM activity within their borders\u2014a descriptor that is not actually defined in the Convention\u2014must notify the Secretariat, at which point they have three years to develop their National Action Plans. More than 70 countries are believed to have some ASGM, says Henrik Selin, an associate professor of international relations at Boston University and an expert observer for the Minamata Convention on Mercury Effectiveness Evaluation Committee.<\/p>\n<p xmlns:ali=\"http:\/\/www.niso.org\/schemas\/ali\/1.0\/\" xmlns:oasis=\"http:\/\/www.niso.org\/standards\/z39-96\/ns\/oasis-exchange\/table\" xmlns:xsi=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2001\/XMLSchema-instance\"><span>\u201cThe effectiveness of formalization hinges on a government\u2019s ability to simultaneously address related development issues, such as youth unemployment and support for agriculture,\u201d he says. Selin adds that some developing countries may lack the financial and human resources\u2014or the political will\u2014to tackle such a complex issue, rife with environmental and societal implications.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p xmlns:ali=\"http:\/\/www.niso.org\/schemas\/ali\/1.0\/\" xmlns:oasis=\"http:\/\/www.niso.org\/standards\/z39-96\/ns\/oasis-exchange\/table\" xmlns:xsi=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2001\/XMLSchema-instance\"><span>Henrik Selin\u00a0conducts research and teaches classes on global and regional politics and policy making on environment and sustainable development.
