Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted a February 21, 2019 symposium entitled &#8220;<\/span>By Land and By Sea: China\u2019s Belt and Road in Europe.&#8221; Several Pardee School professors spoke at the symposium, which focused on geo-economic and geo-strategic perspectives of China&#8217;s Belt and Road Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The first panel, focusing on geo-economic perspectives, featured\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/kevin-p-gallagher\/\">Kevin Gallagher<\/a><span>, Director of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/gdp\/\">Global Development Policy (GDP) Center<\/a><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span>Professor of Global Development Policy at the Pardee School;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/thomas-berger\/\">Thomas Berger,<\/a>\u00a0BUCSA Director and Professor of International Relations at the Pardee School; Grant Rhode, Senior Lecturer at the Pardee School and Adjunct Professor in Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Naval War College; and\u00a0Philippe Le Corre, Senior Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The panel covered topics including\u00a0<span>China\u2019s offensive at the periphery of Europe (southern Europe case studies),\u00a0China\u2019s offensive in the center of Europe (Germany and northern Europe) and the emerging hub of the Maritime Silk Road in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The second panel, focusing on geo-strategic perspectives, featured\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/min-ye\/\">Min Ye<\/a>,\u00a0<span>Director of Undergraduate Studies and Associate Professor of International Relations at the Pardee School;\u00a0Amb.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/vesko-garcevic\/\">Vesko Garcevic<\/a>, Professor of the Practice of International Relations at the Pardee School; former member\u00a0of the European Parliament\u00a0Georgios Dimitrakopoulos<b>; <\/b>and\u00a0Robert Ross, Professor of Political Science at Boston College and Associate at the John King Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Topics covered in the second panel included\u00a0<span>Chinese and Russian strategic influence in Southeastern Europe and the emerging presence of China in the Arctic and the Mediterranean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The second panel was followed by a reception at 121 Bay State Road.<\/p>\n<p><span>The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/asian\/\">Center for the Study of Asia<\/a><span>\u00a0promotes comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and cross-national understanding of Asia through coordination of teaching missions, research support, community-building among faculty and students, and broad outreach beyond the university.
