Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University,\u00a0attended an October 4, 2018 workshop at the\u00a0ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) headquarters in Singapore on regional surveillance efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The workshop, entitled \u201cScaling Up and Leveraging Regional Surveillance\u201d, was sponsored by Boston University\u2019s <span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/gdp\">Global Development Policy (GDP) Center<\/a>, the Kyoto University School of Government, the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Many thanks to the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office for co-hosting fascinating <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GDPC_BU?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GDPC_BU<\/a> workshop on regional surveillance, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Japanfoundation?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Japanfoundation<\/a> Center for Global Partnership for its financial support! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BUPardeeSchool?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BUPardeeSchool<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UuJwuKTfmq\">pic.twitter.com\/UuJwuKTfmq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 William Grimes (@WilliamWGrimes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilliamWGrimes\/status\/1047829802219003905?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 4, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The roundtable discussion convened a group of experts and academics to take stock of regional surveillance efforts to date and develop a vision for their further development. In particular, the workshop served as a platform for the sharing of experiences between IMF and regional financial arrangements (RFAs) and focused on how to scale up and leverage regional surveillance capacity and how to foster constructive collaboration between the IMF and RFAs.<\/p>\n<p>AMRO is a new international organization charged with supporting the $240 billion dollar East Asian crisis support fund known as the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralization (CMIM). CMIM is one of several regional arrangements that are reshaping the global financial safety net. While effective economic surveillance is crucial to these arrangements\u2019 mission to prevent and manage currency crises, there has been little study of how AMRO and others implement surveillance and coordinate with the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n<p>This workshop was the first event in a two-year project led by Grimes and GDP Center Assistant Director William Kring and funded by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership to contribute to the development of best practices in regional economic surveillance.\u00a0Grimes is the Principal Investigator and Kring is the Co-Principal Investigator on the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership grant that is funding the project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The GDP Center<\/a><span>\u00a0is a university-wide research center in partnership with the Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/\">Research<\/a><span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><span>Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/span><span>.
