Timothy Longman,<\/a>\u00a0Associate Professor of International Relations and Political Science\u00a0at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and Director of\u00a0the Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs<\/a>\u00a0(CURA), was recently interviewed about his latest book\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Memory and Justice in Post-Genocide Rwanda<\/a>\u00a0(<\/span><\/em>Cambridge University Press, July 2017)<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Longman was interviewed for a January 31, 2018 article in\u00a0BU Today<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>entitled “Telling the Truth about Rwanda.<\/a>”<\/p>\n

Timothy Longman<\/a>\u00a0doesn\u2019t go back to Rwanda anymore. Too much of his work has displeased the regime.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel safe to go,\u201d says Longman, director of BU\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs<\/a>\u00a0(CURA) and a former director of the Rwanda field office of\u00a0<\/span>Human Rights Watch<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s far too easy for someone to have a tragic car crash or eat something that was \u2018spoiled.\u2019 And I have been singled out by the foreign minister as someone she does not like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Longman\u2019s new book,\u00a0<\/span>Memory and Justice in Post-Genocide Rwanda<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Cambridge University Press, 2017), continues his examination of that country\u2019s long recovery from the genocidal tribal wars that killed more than 500,000 people in 1994. His earlier book\u00a0<\/span>Christianity and Genocide in Rwanda<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>(Cambridge University Press, 2010) looks at how the leaders of Christian churches supported the genocide to secure their own power. Rwanda has been rightly praised for its successes, but its recovery has not been without cost, and life there now is extremely hard for most, says the Pardee School of Global Studies and College of Arts & Sciences professor of political science and of international relations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Longman brings\u00a025 years of research in Rwanda to the table in the book<\/span>, focusing\u00a0on\u00a0the current Rwandan government\u2019s social engineering project and how the population has responded while\u00a0<\/span><\/span>broadly analyzing the government\u2019s social policies.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the book, Longman argues\u00a0<\/span>that despite good intentions and important innovations, Rwanda\u2019s authoritarian political context has hindered the ability of transnational justice to bring the radical social and political transformations that its advocates hoped.<\/span><\/p>\n

Longman<\/a>\u2019s current research focuses on state -society relations in Africa, looking particularly at human rights, transitional justice, democratization, civil society, the politics of race and ethnicity, religion and politics, and women and politics.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
