Joseph Fewsmith<\/a>, Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed for\u00a0several recent articles examining\u00a0whether or not Chinese\u00a0President\u00a0Xi Jinping will shed any light on his successor during the country’s\u00a0Party Congress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fewsmith was interviewed for an October 23, 2017 article in the\u00a0New York Times<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>entitled “What It Could Mean if China\u2019s Leader Won\u2019t Name an Heir.<\/a>”<\/p>\n

\u201cXi seems to be reshaping the rules of the game,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Joseph Fewsmith<\/a>, a Boston University professor who studies Chinese elite politics. \u201cThis lineup, if it is correct, seems to confirm this.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fewsmith was also interviewed for a widely-syndicated article by the\u00a0Associated Press,\u00a0<\/em>entitled “China’s Xi Unveils New Leaders but No Obvious Successor,<\/a>” published on October 25, 2017.<\/p>\n

The absence of an obvious successor pointed to Xi’s longer-term ambitions, said Joseph Fewsmith, an expert on Chinese politics at Boston University.<\/p>\n

“It suggests that Xi will likely serve a third term, and that he is likely to name his own successor,” Fewsmith said. “We have not seen that for two decades.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Fewsmith is Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University. He is the author or editor of eight books, including, most recently,\u00a0<\/span>The Logic and Limits of Political Reform in China\u00a0<\/i>(January 2013).
