Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University,\u00a0spoke at two events at Stanford University on October 12, 2017. The first was co-sponsored\u00a0by the\u00a0\u00a0Southeast Asia Program and the\u00a0Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University, and the second was hosted by the Center for International Security and Cooperation and the Freeman Spogli Institute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first event, entitled &#8220;Implications of <em>L\u2019affaire Ahok<\/em>, or, How Indonesian Democracy Dies,&#8221; featured a discussion led by Menchik\u00a0outlining the role that Indonesian Islamic civil society could play in the decline of Indonesian democracy.\u00a0Drawing on original survey data and interviews, as well as case studies in which the preferences of Nahlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah leaders have become visible, Menchik\u00a0argued that their values are compatible with both democracy and authoritarianism.<\/p>\n<p>Menchik was also a discussant at &#8220;<span>The Moderates\u2019 Dilemma: Obstacles to Mobilization Against Islamist Extremism,&#8221; examining\u00a0a paper by\u00a0Kerry Ann Carter Persen, Carnegie Predoctoral Fellow at CISAC for the 2017-2018 academic year and a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Person&#8217;s paper includes an\u00a0<span>original survey experiment and observational data of participant behavior during two surveys that demonstrate moderates hide anti-violent views for fear of reputation costs and that these effects vary by individuals\u2019 sensitivity to reputation costs and degree of uncertainty of others\u2019 attitudes.<br \/>\n<\/span><span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/jeremy-menchik\/\">Jeremy Menchik\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0research interests include comparative politics, religion and politics, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.\u00a0At Boston University he is a member of the graduate faculty of political science and coordinates the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/graduate\/ma-in-international-affairs-maia\/maia-religion-and-international-affairs-specialization\/\">MAIA program with specialization in Religion and International Affairs<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof. Jeremy Menchik spoke at two events at Stanford University on October 12, 2017. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11588,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[8414,1168],"tags":[9860,10431,8379,8448,8378,9382],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/30394"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/11588"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=30394"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/30394\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":30400,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/30394\/revisions\/30400"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=30394"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=30394"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=30394"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
