Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed\u00a0on the run-off\u00a0of Jakarta\u2019s gubernatorial election and the\u00a0difficultly for minority political leaders to gain political power\u00a0across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Menchik was interviewed for\u00a0an April 18, 2017 article in\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\">The Atlantic<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2017\/04\/indonesia-ahok-muslim\/523002\/\">Does the Quran Forbid Electing Christians?<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From the text of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>\u201cThis is not a \u2018Muslim problem,\u2019\u201d Jeremy Menchick, assistant professor of political science and religious studies at Boston University, wrote in an email. \u201cHow many Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists have been President of the U.S. or even in Congress? How did the Jewish and evangelical community react to [Muslim congressman Keith] Ellison being a candidate for [Democratic National Committee] chair? How do Arab parties fare in Israel? Or Muslim politicians in the Philippines?\u201d The simplest explanation for the relative paucity of non-Muslim leaders in the Muslim world may just be that societies everywhere tend to have leaders who demographically represent them.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/jeremy-menchik\/\">Jeremy Menchik\u2019s<\/a><span> research interests include comparative politics, religion and politics, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
