Joseph Fewsmith<\/a>, Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed on the growing backlash in China over a breach in protocol by President-Elect Donald Trump\u00a0of a long-established United States\u00a0policy toward Taiwan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fewsmith was quoted in a widely-syndicated December 13, 2016 article by the\u00a0Associated Press\u00a0<\/em>entitled “Why China Sees Taiwan Issue as Non-Negotiable.<\/a>”<\/p>\n

Trump’s statement is an “act of incredible brinksmanship and hubris \u2014 something that threatens some four decades of diplomacy that has preserved peace and promoted prosperity,” Boston University China expert Joseph Fewsmith said in an email.<\/p>\n

Although Beijing has so far been restrained in its response, should Trump continue on this tack, “China will react, and strongly,” Fewsmith said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
