Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed on the growing backlash in China over a breach in protocol by President-Elect Donald Trump\u00a0of a long-established United States\u00a0policy toward Taiwan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fewsmith was quoted in a widely-syndicated December 13, 2016 article by the\u00a0<em>Associated Press\u00a0<\/em>entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2016\/12\/13\/world\/asia\/ap-as-ap-explains-china-taiwan.html?_r=1\">Why China Sees Taiwan Issue as Non-Negotiable.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From the text of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"243\" data-total-count=\"2504\">Trump&#8217;s statement is an &#8220;act of incredible brinksmanship and hubris \u2014 something that threatens some four decades of diplomacy that has preserved peace and promoted prosperity,&#8221; Boston University China expert Joseph Fewsmith said in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"145\" data-total-count=\"2649\">Although Beijing has so far been restrained in its response, should Trump continue on this tack, &#8220;China will react, and strongly,&#8221; Fewsmith said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"145\" data-total-count=\"2649\">You can read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2016\/12\/13\/world\/asia\/ap-as-ap-explains-china-taiwan.html?_r=1\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"145\" data-total-count=\"2649\"><span>Fewsmith is Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University.
