Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University,<\/a><span>\u00a0was recently interviewed on the\u00a0<\/span>trade-regulation debate over\u00a0<span>President Barack Obama\u2019s new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2016\/10\/14\/statement-president-presidential-policy-directive-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12-page directive <\/a><span>on trade and travel to Cuba that also contains a provision that\u00a0<strong><\/strong>instructs the U.S. director of national intelligence to cooperate with Cuban intelligence services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Wippl was quoted in an Oct. 20, 2016 article in\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/\">The Miami Herald<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article109411977.html\">New Trade-Regulation Debate: Should the U.S. Share Intelligence with Cuba?<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>From the text of the article:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>Joseph Wippl, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer who spent 30 years in the agency\u2019s National Clandestine Service, said that was not the case today. Cuba no longer poses a serious threat to the United States, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think probably the intelligence relationship we\u2019d have with Cuba is like the one we have with Russia,\u201d he said. \u201cWill they continue to spy against us? I would think so. Would we continue to spy against them? I would think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><span>Despite that adversarial relationship, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have agreed to share intelligence on Islamic State militants.
