Woodward, Jr.<\/a>, a Professor of the Practice of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, was the featured speaker at the quarterly meeting of the New England chapter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afio.com\/\">Association of Former Intelligence Officers<\/a> (AFIO) held at MIT&#8217;s Endicott House in Dedham on\u00a0April 9, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>A retired CIA officer with extensive overseas service, Prof.\u00a0Woodward\u00a0presented on the topic, &#8220;Countering the Use of Biological Weapons.&#8221; He discussed the biological weapons threat, the unique challenges it poses and policy approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Woodward\u00a0noted that, &#8220;The hard problem of countering BW will only get harder largely because of advances in the life sciences and information technologies. In essence, these advances mean more people can wreak greater BW-derived harm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Woodward\u00a0was hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/arthur-s-hulnick\/\">Arthur Hulnick<\/a>, Professor Emeritus of the Pardee School. \u00a0Thirty people participated in the event. \u00a0AFIO is a national\u00a0non-profit educational association whose membership includes current and former intelligence professionals and those interested in the US intelligence community.<\/p>\n<p><span>John D. Woodward, Jr. is a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer.\u00a0During his twenty-year CIA career, John served as an operations officer in\u00a0the Clandestine Service and as a technical intelligence officer in the Directorate of Science and Technology, with assignments in Washington, DC,\u00a0East Asia, Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.
