Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University,<\/a> said that support\u00a0in the military meant that Chinese President Xi Jinping was able to end 2015 in a position of power.<\/p>\n<p>Fewsmith made the argument in a Dec. 22 article in\u00a0<em>Bloomberg Business\u00a0<\/em>entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-12-22\/china-s-year-of-tumult-puts-xi-s-governance-under-the-microscope\">&#8220;China&#8217;s Year of Tumult Puts Xi&#8217;s Governance Under the Microscope.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the text of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Xi Jinping&#8217;s]\u00a0November meeting with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou set a new high-water mark in relations with the party\u2019s civil war rival.\u00a0And the initiative to streamline the 2.3 million-member People\u2019s Liberation Army\u00a0strengthened his grip on the ultimate guarantor of party rule.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He had a difficult time in the middle of the year, but the military reforms suggest he is back on track,&#8221; said Joseph Fewsmith, a political science professor at Boston University who studies China\u2019s elite politics. &#8220;Not his best year, but ending on a high note.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-12-22\/china-s-year-of-tumult-puts-xi-s-governance-under-the-microscope\">the entire article here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fewsmith is Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University.
