Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston Univeristy is unconvinced that the fast-track trade authority that US President Barack Obama is seeking for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher made his case in an OpEd published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2015\/trans-pacific-partnership-tpp\/\"><em>BUToday<\/em><\/a> (June 11, 2015), ttled <a href=\"the%20TPP will bring little in terms of economic benefits for the majority of Americans, but will involve considerable risks.\"><em>&#8216;The Problem with Obama&#8217;s Trade Pact.&#8217;<\/em> <\/a>Succinctly put, his main argument is that &#8220;<span>the TPP will bring little in terms of economic benefits for the majority of Americans, but will involve considerable risks.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following excerpts from the OpEd explain the argument:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>A look at the numbers is revealing.\u00a0A\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/media\/1692509\/err176.pdf\">government study<\/a><span>\u00a0by the US Agriculture Department shows that the deal would have no economic benefits for the economy, concluding that \u201cthe TPP is unlikely to have substantial macroeconomic effects.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Our loss is not our trading partners\u2019 gain. The benefits for all the TPP countries are estimated by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.com\/publications\/pb\/pb12-16.pdf\">Peterson Institute<\/a>\u00a0to be 0.49 percent of their combined GDP. The TPP is estimated to actually\u00a0<em>hurt<\/em>\u00a0the economies of Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and many South Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>With the economic gains so small, and even then only materializing a decade from now, it is no wonder that members of Congress at least want to make sure the agreement, at a minimum, does not put US businesses or workers at a disadvantage or undermine the public health, safety, and environmental policies on which Americans rely.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The full OpEd can be read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2015\/trans-pacific-partnership-tpp\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>Gallagher is an Associate Professor of global development policy at Boston University\u2019s Frederick S.
