Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University<\/a> celebrated the completion of its inaugural year in a Convocation ceremony that brought together faculty, family and students for a day of firsts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today is a day for celebration. We celebrate the achievements you have attained as students, and we celebrate the ambitions you bring out into the world,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/adil-najam\/\">Adil Najam,<\/a> Inaugural Dean of the Pardee School.<\/p>\n<p>The convocation was held Saturday, May 16 at Boston University&#8217;s Walter Brown Arena. A beautiful warm day greeted the approximately 1,000 guests and 25 faculty members\u00a0who celebrated the graduation of the first class to be called members of the Pardee School.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only are we proud that our \u00a0students come from all corners of the world, but we note that they work on the greatest challenges of our times&#8221; Najam said. &#8220;I give to you truly the future of the planet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 214 undergraduates and 51\u00a0graduate students will join the more than 9,000 alumni from programs currently under the purview of the Pardee School.<\/p>\n<p>The Convocation ceremony included remarks from Najam,\u00a0as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/2015\/05\/14\/meet-your-inaugural-year-student-award-winners\/\">presentation of the following awards:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The CAS (College of Arts and Sciences) Prize for Undergraduate Academic Excellence, to Sophia Ann Qadir<\/li>\n<li>The Pardee School Graduate Excellence Award, to Louisa May Klann<\/li>\n<li>The Pardee School Undergraduate Excellence Award, to Caroline Birsner, Brendon Bowdridge and Lauren Michael<\/li>\n<li>The Pardee School Regional Studies Academic Excellence Award, to Paola Peynetti Velazques<\/li>\n<li>The Carole A. Chandler Citizenship Award, to Alba Balla and Sidhanta Mehra<\/li>\n<li>The Amb. Hermann Frederick Eilts Graduate Thesis Award, to Lee Hekking and Nyeleti Karina Honwana<\/li>\n<li>The Amb. Hermann Frederick Eilts Undergraduate Thesis Award, to Fatima Mohie-Eldin<\/li>\n<li>The Gerald and Deanne Gitner Family Prize for Faculty Excellence, to Noora Lori<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Awards were presented by Najam with assistance by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/timothy-p-longman\/\">Tim Longman,<\/a> Director of the African Studies Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/erik-goldstein\/\">Erik Goldstein,<\/a> Professor of International Relations, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/william-w-grimes\/\">William Grimes,<\/a> Associate Dean.<\/p>\n<p>Convocation also provided an opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/2015\/05\/08\/for-hulnick-and-connor-careers-of-distinction\/\">commemorate the careers<\/a> of the Pardee School&#8217;s two retiring faculty members, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/arthur-s-hulnick\/\">Arthur Hulnick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/walter-d-connor\/\">Walter Connor.<\/a> Both were introduced by their colleagues and presented with commemorative bowls.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We the faculty, staff and students of the Pardee School congratulate Arthur Hulnick for his commitment and contributions to the study of intelligence and global affairs,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/joseph-wippl\/\">Joe Wippl<\/a>, Director of Graduate Studies. &#8220;And together, we wish him the best.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A devout fan of NASCAR, a proud owner of a flashy sports car, and a registered Republican, Walt has challenged the stereotypical image of the<br \/>\ntweedy professor in a Volvo listening to NPR on the way to demonstration\u00a0for labor union rights,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/william-r-keylor\/\">William Keylor,<\/a> Professor of International Relations and History. &#8220;We celebrate Walter Connor for his contributions to the profession, to the Pardee School and its students, faculty, and staff, and we wish him the very best in retirement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Associate Dean Grimes was assisted by Wippl and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/joseph-fewsmith\/\">Joseph Fewsmith,<\/a> Director of Undergraduate Studies, in the conferring of degrees.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony also honored the students selected as members of the International Relations Honors Program. They are;\u00a0Latifah Azlan,\u00a0Erinn Benedict,\u00a0Brendon Bowdridge,\u00a0Ashley Davidson,\u00a0Britta Dosch,\u00a0Ela Fadli,\u00a0Alexander Falco,\u00a0Thomas Fischer,\u00a0Diana Hughes,\u00a0Graciela Marino,\u00a0Fatima Mohie`Eldin,\u00a0Divya Moorjani,\u00a0Sofia Panero,\u00a0Sophie Spiers,\u00a0Marlene Stoute,\u00a0Allison Westervelt,\u00a0Deborah Wong and\u00a0Madeleine Work.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;<\/span><span>The IR Honors program is a <\/span><span>yearlong intensive research project,&#8221; said Grimes when conferring the degrees. &#8220;The students who have been selected <\/span><br \/>\n<span>to participate in this program are among the most academically <\/span><span>accomplished in their class. The program culminates in a thesis defense\u00a0<\/span><span>before a panel of BU professors representing a variety of disciplines.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the ceremony, students and guests enjoyed a reception, photobooth, and the opportunity to reflect on their rite of passage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited an relieved.
