Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University,<\/a> said that Burundi is in danger of descending into ethnic violence.<\/p>\n<p>Longman made the argument in the International Business Times on May 13, responding to news out of the African country that the President\u00a0<span>Pierre Nkurunziza had been ousted in a military coup. The article was entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/africa-watches-burundi-coup-see-if-conflict-spreads-reignites-hutu-tutsi-ethnic-1919449\">\u201c<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/africa-watches-burundi-coup-see-if-conflict-spreads-reignites-hutu-tutsi-ethnic-1919449\">Africa Watches Burundi Coup To See If Conflict Spreads, Reignites Hutu-Tutsi Ethnic Conflict.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the text of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMeanwhile, Burundi faces more than just the typical challenges posed by power-hungry politicians who are tempted to overstay their welcomes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe fear that everybody has is that the government in trying to stay in power might stoke ethnic conflict again,\u201d said Timothy P. That article is entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/who-godefroid-niyombare-meet-burundi-army-general-who-declared-coup-oust-president-1920954\">&#8220;Who Is Godefroid Niyombare? Meet The Burundi Army General Who Declared A Coup To Oust President Pierre Nkurunziza.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">From the text of that article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Niyombare\u2019s wife was fatally shot in an alleged assassination attempt against the general shortly after his dismissal. Although Niyombare was removed from his post, he was not driven out of the army. It\u2019s not yet known whether Niyombare\u2019s attempt to oust Nkurunziza was personally or politically motivated, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth motives are probably relevant,\u201d said Timothy Longman, director of the African Studies Center at Boston University&#8217;s Pardee School of Global Studies. \u201cBut the Burundi army has been regarded as a real success since the transition in 2006.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/who-godefroid-niyombare-meet-burundi-army-general-who-declared-coup-oust-president-1920954\">the entire article here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Longman was also quoted in a <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> article on the topic entitled, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/burundi-army-general-says-president-has-been-ousted-1431521997\">&#8220;Burundi Army General Says President Has Been Ousted.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">From the text of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Burundi\u2019s location at the nexus of Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo means that unrest there tends to spill over into its neighbors. More than 50,000 Burundian have fled to neighboring countries since mid-April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the violence takes on an ethnic tone that would have serious reverberations in Rwanda and Congo,\u201d said Timothy Longman, the director of Boston University\u2019s African Studies Center. \u201cThe history of the region is that when there\u2019s conflict in one country it tends to spread to the others.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/burundi-army-general-says-president-has-been-ousted-1431521997\">the entire article here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Longman was also quoted in a further International Business Times article on May 14 entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/united-states-watching-burundi-great-concern-us-trained-soldiers-take-prominent-role-1923191?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=prbuexperts\">&#8220;United States Watching Burundi With &#8216;Great Concern,&#8217; As US-Trained Soldiers Take Prominent Role.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the text of that article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/~\/media\/Projects\/idp\/laws-and-policies-added-after-2012\/Burundi_Arusha-Peace-and-Reconciliation-Agreement-for-Burundi.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Arusha Agreement<\/a>\u00a0of 2000 is a treaty that ended Burundi\u2019s 12-year civil war, which left some 300,000 people dead.
