Hefner and Longman Join Pardee School DIS Faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/pardeeschool\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/pardeeschool\/files\/2015\/03\/Hefner-Longman.jpg\" alt=\"Hefner-Longman\" width=\"568\" height=\"330\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/files\/2015\/03\/Hefner-Longman.jpg 667w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/files\/2015\/03\/Hefner-Longman-516x300.jpg 516w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/robert-hefner\/\">Professor Robert Hefner<\/a> of the Department of Anthropology and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/profile\/timothy-p-longman\/\">Associate Professor Timothy Longman<\/a> of the Department of Political Science have both assumed joint appointments in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/unplaced-pages-holder\/international-studies\/\">Division of International Studies (DIS)<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/\">Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/a>. As joint appointments, they will both now also be professors of international relations and serve on the faculty of DIS.<\/p>\n<p><span>Professor\u00a0Hefner is a former president of the Association for Asian Studies\u00a0and his research focuses on religion, pluralism, and world affairs, and particularly on Islam and civil society in South East Asia. His recent books include\u00a0<\/span><i>Shari\u2018a Politics:\u00a0 Islamic Law and Society in the Modern World\u00a0<\/i><span>(Indiana University Press 2011) and\u00a0<\/span><i>Muslims and Modernity: Culture and Society Since 1800\u00a0<\/i><span>(Cambridge University Press 2010).\u00a0He is also the Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cura\/\">Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs (CURA)<\/a>, which is part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/unplaced-pages-holder\/regional-studies\/\">Division of Regional Studies<\/a>\u00a0at the BU Pardee School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Associate Professor Longman&#8217;s research focuses on state-society relations in Africa, looking particularly at human rights, transitional justice, democratization, civil society, the politics of race and ethnicity, religion and politics, and women and politics.
