Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University,<\/a> has been invited to speak at the Herbert C. Kelman Seminar on International Conflict Analysis and Resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The topic of the seminar is, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/events\/what-happens-to-media-coverage-of-conflicts-after-everyone-leaves\/?utm_source=WhatCountsEmail&amp;utm_medium=PON%20Harvard+Event%20Emails&amp;utm_campaign=2015.02.09%20Kelman\">&#8220;What Happens to Media Coverage of Conflicts After Everyone Leaves?&#8221;<\/a> The conference will be held Feb. 9 at 4:30 p.m. at the Tsai Auditorium, Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, 1730 Cambridge St., Cambridge.<\/p>\n<p>The Kelman series is sponsored by the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School, the\u00a0<a title=\"Nieman Foundation for Journalism\" href=\"http:\/\/nieman.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nieman Foundation for Journalism<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy\" href=\"http:\/\/shorensteincenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs\" href=\"http:\/\/wcfia.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs<\/a>,\u00a0and Boston area members of the\u00a0<a title=\"Alliance for Peacebuilding\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allianceforpeacebuilding.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alliance for Peacebuilding<\/a>. The theme for this year\u2019s Kelman Seminar is \u201cNegotiation, Conflict and the News Media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining Loftis will be\u00a0Farnaz Fassihi,\u00a0senior Middle East correspondent for\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0and 2015 Nieman fellow at Harvard. She has lived overseas since 2002, covering wars and uprisings from Afghanistan to Iraq in the region. She served as the\u00a0<em>Journal<\/em>\u2019s Baghdad bureau chief and deputy Middle East Bureau Chief based in Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>Loftis served in the State Department and Foreign Service from 1980 to 2012, where he held a wide variety of assignments, including Acting Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization (2010-2012), Special Representative for Avian and Pandemic Influenza (2009), Senior Adviser for Security Negotiations and Agreements (2004-2007), Ambassador to Lesotho (2001-2004) and Deputy Chief of Mission in Mozambique (1999-2001).\u00a0\u00a0 He was most recently an Inter-agency Professional in Residence at the United States Institute of Peace (2012). From 2007-2009, he was the Deputy Commandant and Senior Adviser for International Affairs of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University, where he also taught Strategic Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>In early 2008, Loftis was the lead negotiator for a status of forces agreement with Iraq.\u00a0 He was also the Deputy Executive Director of the Implementation Planning Team for the creation of the Department of Defense\u2019s new Africa Command (AFRICOM).<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact Donna Hicks at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:dhicks@wcfia.harvard.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dhicks@wcfia.harvard.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof. Robert Loftis has been invited to speak at the upcoming Herbert C.
