{"id":12348,"date":"2014-09-24T11:03:51","date_gmt":"2014-09-24T16:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/?p=12348"},"modified":"2021-02-04T10:21:43","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T15:21:43","slug":"prof-selin-on-the-un-climate-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/2014\/09\/24\/prof-selin-on-the-un-climate-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof. Selin on the UN Climate Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the world has geared up for the United Nation&#8217;s cliamte summit called by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, all eyes are on New York and the gathering of world leaders &#8211; national, civil society, business &#8211; pronouncing their renewed committment to tackling the menace of global climate change. <a href=\"\/pardeeschool\/profile\/henrik-selin\/\">Prof Henrik Selin<\/a> of the BU Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies is cautiously optimistic that maybe something has changed this time. But cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>Quoted in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/articles\/2014\/09\/24\/whats-next-after-the-united-nations-climate-summit\"><em>US News and World Report<\/em><\/a> news story on the UN Summit, Prof. Selin says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There is more positive rhetoric now coming out of the U.S. and China ahead of the Paris meeting than was coming out ahead of the Copenhagen meeting,&#8221;\u00a0says\u00a0<a href=\"\/pardeeschool\/profile\/henrik-selin\/\">Henrik Selin<\/a>, an international relations\u00a0professor at Boston University\u00a0who focuses on climate policy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The domestic politics are changing in the U.S., with federal rules coming out and the federal government becoming more involved and serious,&#8221; he says.\u00a0&#8220;And similarly in\u00a0China, it\u2019s in China\u2019s interest to curb air pollution, especially as that relates to health risks. China is experimenting with regional carbon markets and have said that in a year or two, they will have a national carbon market.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prof. Selin had also commented at length on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/2014\/09\/17\/humphery-felows-pardee-school\/\">changing mood of global climate negotiations<\/a> at a recent panel discussion (September 17, 2014) held at the Pardee School on the emerging dimensions of \u00a0climate and development debates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof Henrik Selin of the BU Frederick S.
