It can be earned by g<span>raduate students in any Boston University graduate or professional program by fulfilling the following requirements while also fulfilling the requirements of their degree programs. The Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies can in most cases be completed without taking courses beyond the number required for the student\u2019s degree. The certificate will be awarded only upon completion of the degree program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This certificate can easily be undertaken by students in the MAIA, IR\/MBA, and\u00a0MAIR programs. Combination with other Pardee degree programs is possible but may prove logistically difficult.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"buttons\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/files\/2015\/12\/Certs-insert-draft.pdf\">Info Sheet<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/asian\/\">Asian Studies<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/asian-studies\/\" class=\"buttons\">Bulletin<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/pardeeschool\/files\/2020\/02\/Asian-Studies-Certificate-Tracking-Sheet.pdf\">Tracking Sheet<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/admissions\/graduate-admissions\/\" class=\"buttons\">Prospective Students<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Requirements<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Successfully complete at least 16 credits of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/asian\/academics\/graduate\/gradcert\/\">coursework<\/a> in courses primarily focused on Asia , with a grade of B or better in each course.<\/li>\n<li>Concentration requirement:\u00a0 At least three of the four courses must focus on a sub-regional or substantive area (e.g. East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia; comparative government, cultural\/archeological preservation, Buddhism).<\/li>\n<li>Include classes from at least two departments or schools.<\/li>\n<li>Include no more than 4 credits of coursework in directed study or research,\u00a0<span>except with written permission of the Director of BUCSA.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"easBody\">Students must complete a piece of significant independent work such as an M.A., M.F.A. thesis, doctoral dissertation, or two substantial research papers in graduate-level seminars.<\/li>\n<li class=\"easBody\">Students must demonstrate reading knowledge of an Asian language relevant to the course of study.\u00a0 This will be demonstrated by passing the language proficiency test of the student\u2019s own department where it is required; for students in schools or departments that do not offer language proficiency testing, BUCSA will arrange an assessment of reading proficiency based on a dictionary-aided, timed translation of a professionally-relevant scholarly (or equivalent) document.<\/li>\n<li class=\"easBody\">Students must receive approval of completion from the Director of BUCSA and the student\u2019s departmental faculty advisor.\u00a0 Students are expected to consult with the BUCSA Director at the beginning of their studies in order to ensure that their planned courses will fulfill the goals of the certificate program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><em><strong>View a list of pre-approved courses for the\u00a0Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/asian\/academics\/graduate\/gradcert\/\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Other courses may be applied to the Graduate Certificate with permission of the Director of BUCSA. Please note that some classes accepted toward the Asian Studies Certificate may not count toward a student\u2019s degree.
