Undergraduates studying international relations choose from a wide range of interdisciplinary courses in history, economics, political science, anthropology, sociology, and religion, among other disciplines. In a globalizing world, the study of international relations provides a portal for entry into a variety of career fields or for further graduate or professional training.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"buttons\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/international-relations\/\" class=\"buttons\">Bulletin<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/student-affairs-and-services\/undergraduate-student-services\/\">Academic Advising<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/student-affairs-and-services\/frequently-asked-questions\/\" class=\"buttons\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Curriculum Overview<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>All IR students must complete 14 classes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four classes will relate to a \u201cregion\u201d of the world.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four classes will pertain to a \u201cfunction\u201d in the field of international relations. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six classes, known as \u201cpre-requisites\u201d and \u201cprinciple courses,\u201d are listed below and are required of all majors. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Two prerequisites:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EC 101 &#8211; Microeconomics<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EC 102 &#8211; Macroeconomics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Four Required Principle Courses (must obtain a C or above):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>CAS IR 271<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Introduction to International Relations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>CAS IR 292<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fundamentals of International Economics*<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>CAS IR 349<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> History of International Relations, 1900-45<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>CAS IR 350<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> History of International Relations Since 1945<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Students who select the \u201cInternational Economics, Business, and Politics\u201d functional track must take CAS EC 392 International Macroeconomics, QST IM 345 Global Business Environment, or IR 399 Fundamentals of Global Money, in place of CAS IR 292. Please note that these courses require the following prerequisite courses: EC 392 requires CAS EC 203 as a prerequisite, and CAS EC 204 as a corequisite. CAS IR 292 and QST IM 345 and IR 399 require CAS EC 101 and CAS EC 102 as prerequisites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Minoring In International Relations<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A minor in IR consists of six 4-credit courses. These include four required principal courses listed above in the Required Principal Courses section and two additional courses from any of the regional or functional tracks as chosen by the student. A grade of C or higher must be achieved in all of these courses to count toward a minor in IR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Tracks<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students also must declare one regional track and one functional track by the end of sophomore year. The regional and the functional track consists of four courses each. Two of those courses must be at the 400 level or above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Looking to declare your tracks? Fill out your International Relations Major Track Declaration Form <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/international-relations-track-declaration-form\/\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pardee School offers courses in 9 distinct subfields known as \u201ctracks.\u201d Tracks are divided into two types:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/undergraduate\/international-relations\/functional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">functional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/undergraduate\/international-relations\/regional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Regional Tracks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Africa\/Middle East<\/li>\n<li>Asia<\/li>\n<li>Europe<\/li>\n<li>Latin America<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Functional tracks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environment\/Development<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign Policy\/Security Studies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Economics, Business, and Politics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Systems and World Order<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional Politics\/Cultural Anthropology<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No course may be used in more than one track. This arrangement is designed to give the undergraduate concentrator reasonable facility in an important functional subfield of international relations as well as an understanding of at least one region of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a detailed explanation of the program requirements, please refer to the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/international-relations\/ba\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">university bulletin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">The IR Honors Program<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pardee School Honors Program is a selective, two-semester intensive research project resulting in an Honors Thesis. The thesis is completed under the guidance of a faculty advisor and defended before a panel of professors at the end of the research year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honors students are enrolled in CAS IR 401 and IR 402. Through these courses, students participate in mandatory seminars designed to teach skills related to writing and research. IR 401 and 402 count as upper-level IR courses and may be applied if students\u2019 tracks if their thesis topic is relevant. Participating students also engage in co-curricular activities that reinforce and expand their knowledge of their research topic. Successful students graduate with Honors from the Pardee School, the highest level of academic achievement for undergraduates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Honors Thesis is a significant piece of academic writing for publication, employment purposes, or post baccalaureate applications.
