{"id":10750,"date":"2014-08-10T13:14:25","date_gmt":"2014-08-10T17:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/?page_id=10750"},"modified":"2021-08-19T14:58:23","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T18:58:23","slug":"african-studies-african-languages","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/undergraduate\/african-studies-african-languages\/","title":{"rendered":"African Studies \/ African Languages &#038; Literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The African Studies curriculum provides ample opportunity and variety to the student interested in pursuing the minor.<\/p>\n<p>The minor in African language\u00a0of the student\u2019s choosing is applied in courses in cultural and linguistic anthropology, sociology of language, history, language in government and education, literature, international relations, ethnomusicology, and folklore and oral traditions.<\/p>\n<p>Undergraduates can elect to minor in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/undergraduate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">African Studies and African Languages &amp; Literature<\/a>. In addition to on-campus African Studies offerings, students can take courses through\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/abroad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BU Study Abroad<\/a> programs. Opportunities also exist for students to cross-register in African Studies courses at nearby\u00a0colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\">African Studies Center<\/a> offers degree-enhancing opportunities for\u00a0undergraduates as well as graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>The African Studies Center is a federally funded National Resource Center for African Studies. As such, the center has financial aid available for both undergraduate and graduate students who are studying African languages. Students from programs such as public health, education, law, business, and art history have been past recipients of these fellowships.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"buttons\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/undergraduate\/\" class=\"buttons\">African Studies Center<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/african-studies\/minor-african-languages\/\" class=\"buttons\">Bulletin<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Minoring in African Studies and African Languages &amp; Literature<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The minors require the completion of six courses in total. Of the six courses, four are required courses and two are elective courses. Of the four required courses, two courses must be at the 300-level study of an African language; the two other required courses are CAS LD 491 and CAS LD 492 Directed Study in African Languages and Linguistics.
